At Kululeko, we believe lasting success for any country depends on two things: growing the economy and reducing inequality.
You can’t solve one without the other. Economic growth is unsustainable if inequality rises. And inequality can’t be tackled without economic growth.
We submitted a policy proposal, BEE3, that promotes both growth and transformation. In South Africa, these aren’t just nice-to-haves; they’re political necessities.
It gained traction. BEE3 is now being seriously considered by the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition as a funding mechanism for the national Transformation Fund.
That early success made us think, maybe there’s more we can contribute.
The name comes from Nkululeko, the Zulu word for freedom. We believe economic freedom is the foundation for all freedom.
We also believe that South Africa's problems like crime, inequality, migration, and transformation, mirror the challenges faced by many countries around the world.
BEE3 was our first step: a practical, fair proposal that's being taken seriously by policymakers.
South Africa can be a light for governments everywhere that are wrestling with how to grow their economies while reducing inequality.
Kululeko exists to help shine that light by turning bold, workable ideas into real-world policy.

A mission to make Alex the safest place in South Africa. That's what The Alex Peace Project (TAPP) is: a mission to make Alex the safest place in South Africa.
We believe that if we can find a sustainable solution for crime in Alex, we will be able to tackle crime in any and every township in South Africa.
It's only when the townships are safe that South Africa will be safe.
Safe communities need a foundation that is not dependent on the state.

It gained traction. BEE3 is now being seriously considered by the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition as a funding mechanism for the national Transformation Fund.
That early success made us think, maybe there's more we can contribute. We created Kululeko, the Institute for Economic Freedom, to drive ideas like these.
The name comes from Nkululeko, the Zulu word for freedom. We believe economic freedom is the foundation for all freedom.
Our flagship project, BEE3, offers a practical and fair policy proposal designed to promote both economic growth and transformation in South Africa. It's a testament to our commitment to finding workable solutions to complex challenges.
We believe the best path to better government is active citizenry. More South Africans need to be involved in, informed by, and participating in national and local politics. We believe the best tool to promote active citizenry is voter incentives provided by large corporations (ie: get free airtime vouchers, bread, shirts if you present a thumb with voting ink on voting day). If you have an incentive to vote, then you have an incentive to learn about what the various political parties are doing, and promising to do. More voting means better government.
We have proposed a "regularisation" of all illegal immigrants living in South Africa, on the conditions that (a) they are registered with the Dept of Home Affairs by a certain date, (b) they have no criminal record, and (c) they live in South Africa for ten years without committing any crime. This is coupled with enforcement of border crossings, specifically focused on Beit Bridge.
We are working with the Department of Home Affairs to calculate the true number of people living in South Africa. Without this data it is impossible to get a handle on the requirements for infrastructure and social services.
